Celebrating Freedom with Nature.

On June 1st, Madaraka Day, we at Kerio Tours and Travel organized an exhilarating trip to Mt. Elgon National Park. This special day, marking Kenya’s self-governance, was the perfect occasion to celebrate freedom and nature’s beauty. Our adventure-filled day was packed with activities, stunning sights, and unforgettable experiences.
Our journey began early in the morning as excited travelers gathered at our designated meeting point in Eldoret. With everyone aboard our comfortable tour bus, we set off towards Mt. Elgon National Park, a hidden gem located on the border of Kenya and Uganda. The drive was filled with anticipation, and the scenic route through lush landscapes set the tone for the day ahead.

Upon arrival at the park, we were welcomed by the cool, crisp mountain air and the serene sounds of nature. Our experienced guides provided a brief introduction to Mt. Elgon National Park, highlighting its rich biodiversity, unique geological features, and historical significance. The park, known for its ancient volcanic crater and diverse wildlife, promised an adventure like no other.

Hiking Adventure.
Our main activity for the day was a guided hike up the slopes of Mt. Elgon. Equipped with hiking gear and plenty of enthusiasm, our group set off on the trail. The hike was challenging yet rewarding, offering breathtaking views at every turn. As we ascended, we encountered various flora and fauna unique to this high-altitude ecosystem. The guides shared fascinating insights about the park’s ecology and the history of Mt. Elgon, enriching our hiking experience.

A highlight of our trip was the visit to Kitum Cave, one of the park’s most famous attractions. Known for its historical significance and unique formations, Kitum Cave stretches over 200 meters into the mountain. The cave has been carved out over millennia by elephants and other animals mining for salt. Inside, we marveled at the impressive stalactites and stalagmites, and our guides explained the cave’s formation and its role in local folklore.
After our cave exploration, we enjoyed a well-deserved picnic lunch in a designated area of the park. Surrounded by nature, we savored delicious homemade sandwiches, fresh fruits, and refreshments. This was a perfect time to relax, share our experiences, and soak in the beauty of the park. The camaraderie among the group made the meal even more enjoyable, fostering a sense of community and shared adventure.

Post-lunch, we embarked on a short wildlife-spotting walk. Mt. Elgon National Park is home to a variety of animals, including elephants, buffaloes, and several species of primates and birds. With binoculars in hand, we were fortunate to spot some of these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Our guides helped us identify different species and shared interesting facts about their behavior and conservation.

As the day drew to a close, we gathered for a group photo, capturing the smiles and memories of our Madaraka Day adventure. The hike, the visit to Kitum Cave, the picnic, and the wildlife sightings had all contributed to a fulfilling and enriching experience. We boarded the bus for our journey back to Eldoret, tired but happy, with a newfound appreciation for Kenya’s natural heritage.

Our Madaraka Day trip to Mt. Elgon National Park was more than just a journey; it was a celebration of freedom, nature, and camaraderie.
